Owl City: A Good Egg

We here at TPP don't think we've ever been happier than in kindergarten. Free yakult, nap time and being home in time to catch the best (and most frustrating) cartoon of them all. Who could want for anything more? So everyone find a quiet little space, a blanket and settle on down - It's story time...

In the US state of Minnesota lies a small town called Owatonna with roughly 22,000 inhabitants. Within that city is a quiet road with a modest house. In that house there’s a messy basement with no windows. That’s where you’ll find 23-year-old Adam Young aka Owl City hard at work perfecting candy-coated electro-pop, like a hipster Willy Wonka.

From within the “cave” of his parents’ basement, as Adam likes to call it, he has begun to quickly win over a rapidly growing audience thirsty for something genuine, melodically infectious, and uplifting. The same adjectives could easily describe Owl City’s tunage.

Fuelled by his wild imagination, Adam specialises in writing dreamy, escapist pop songs which are spreading like wild fire. His ascent into popular culture though was as humble and unassuming as his beginnings: He made some songs, put them on Myspace and didn't tell anyone. Fifty million plays and two hundred thousand friends later, Owl City has become a worldwide phenomenon.

He released his first LP Maybe I'm Dreaming in 2008. It went to #16 on the Billboard Album Chart - a jaw dropping debut from an indie singer songwriter. His second album Ocean Eyes (recently released worldwise on Universal Records) rocketed to a #2 bestseller on iTunes (second only to Michael Jackson). Mixed by John Goodmanson (Death Cab For Cutie, Nada Surf, Hot Hot Heat) it was recorded in – you guessed it – Adam’s parents’ basement.

Owl City are currently on a sold out string of North American dates before visiting HK on part of an Asian tour. Performing as a full band set up (including cello, violin, drums, guitar & keyboards) this is a rare opportunity for us in HK to catch a true rising star just as he goes supernova!

So kids, there are plenty of takeaways here and we're sure you can work out the moral of this story (we need more free Yakult in our days.)

The Brits are coming! (no need to hide the women and children)

Next up, The Peoples' Party welcomes the wonderful and eccentric British Sea Power to our shores.

You never know quite what to expect from British Sea Power... Except that they rule.
Songs about ornithology, Polish plumbers, floods on Canvey Island, nudists, Slavia Prague FC and oh so much more have graced three albums to date (with their forth LP - a soundtrack to the re-released 1934 film ‘Man Of Aran’ released earlier this year). 2008’s ‘Do You Like Rock Music?’ was an album of the year making the prestigious Mercury Music Prize shortlist along with Elbow, Radiohead and The Last Shadow Puppets. Sweet.

Famed for their visceral live shows (think foliage, stuffed owls, dancing bears and effervescent energy) they've toured and been commended by the likes of Radiohead, David Bowie, The Flaming Lips and The Killers. They’ve played everywhere from by the sea on the Sicily Isles to underground in a Cornish slate mine - from the largest festivals in the world to the Chelsea Flower Show. We are pleased as punch to be able to welcome them to our fantastic island home, for an unforgettable night in Hong Kong.

But don't just take our word for it:

“The best band in Britain.” exclaimed The Sunday Times, stamping their feet and walking around in circles.

“Stadium-sized melodies and exquisite songwriting” guffawed MOJO, writing imaginary pen lines in the air

“Out of this world… breathes with originality, poise and grace.” slam-danced the NME

“A triumphant lesson in sweeping toward the mainstream with your imagination and mystery intact.” spewed the Guardian, almost choking on their tea and biscuits.

Oh and they were also voted Time Out Live Band Of The Year 2004

Snap!

Local post-punk kings The Yours will provide ample support, and tickets are available at Grappas Cellar and White Noise Records now.

See you in Sept!

Whilst the summer may be good news to most, we here at TPP have never been too much of a fan of the middle months. There's no football on, all our smug teacher friends are in exotic, faraway places and it's too damn hot damnit! We just don't want to play anymore.

So whilst you may be donning your speedos and whipping on the sun screen, we prefer to ready ourselves for a self-inflicted slumber. Yep, we plan to do nothing but sleeeeeeeep 'till September...

Though despite the fact that we'd like to think of ourselves as fierce bears tucking in for hibernation mode, the truth is we're fluffy puppys - and are more likely to wake in a groggy, dribble-stained lethargy wanting to cuddle than with the ferocious rejuvination that our extended snooze should warrant. Good thing for us then that we've just confirmed Handsome Furs for a show on the 6th Sept!

For Canada's Handsome Furs are an explosion of raw, pulsing energy and the minute we let them out of the cage, be warned! They'll unleash their fierce, sweaty danceable rock for an unforgettable evening. This husband and wife duo from Montreal have been making waves across the world with their legendary live performances, and us lucky peeps will soon get to experience why.

You know what else?

They're Hotter than 98% HK humidity, and way more fun.

See you in Sept!

night night

The Power of Two's

It is TPP's great belief that many of the finer things in life come in pairs: Wilder & Pryor, Cheese & Branston, Rafael & Fabio etc. etc.

What were we supposed to do when faced with just one night of electrifying music duos to promote? Double down that's what.

So thanks to all you good folks who've bought your Ratatat tickets in advance (we're sold out!)we have now got two nights of plural pleasure on the cards.

Whilst Brooklyn's finest and Quan's two piece rip it up on saturday night, HK's awe-inspiring Double Partnership (what did you think it stood for?) of DP will be rocking Grappas Cellar to its very core before Ratatat once more bring the dance floor to its knees on the sunday.

Tickets for the Ratatat/DP show sunday show will only be available on the door, on a first come first served basis starting from 7pm.

RATATAT

In one of the more memorable scenes from A Christmas Story a young whipper-snapper gets goaded into sticking his tongue to a frozen pole. So it was that in a similarly dumbfounded display of hijinks and whimsy, TPP were 'Triple Dog Dared' into sizzling our delicate fingertips on the latest news flying off our printing presses late last night...

Diagnosis: "Hot".

For we've just confirmed NYC's finest rock-meets-electronica outfit RATATAT and Aussie Hip Hop supremo Quan, for one hell of a Party for the People come May 23rd!

Get your party pants ready folks as these two are going to light up the dancefloor (even hotter than our scorched pinkies).

Don't say we didn't warn ya!

Tickets go on sale from the 15th March at Grappas Cellar and White Noise.

Jose, Jose, and more Jose!

Just as there seems no depths to the lows George Lucas will take his Star Wars shame, and just as there's not enough oil in the world, let alone cash, to turn Manchester City into a decent footballing outfit (however hard they try) - we've got ourselves a sell out on our hands folks. This, however, is a sell out of the more wholesome variety.

It's not that common to max out shows in advance here in HK, so it's really a big THANK YOU to everyone who has bought their Jose Gonzalez tickets ready for this weekend. It's official, there simply are none left.

Demand has kept on rising and rising though, and we're proud as punch to announce that we've managed to encourage (the ever-encouragable) Jose into doing an additional show with us on sunday afternoon. A matinée, if you will. This will take place on the same day (22nd), at the same venue (Grappas Cellar) and will be the same programme as the night time show (the superb Clementine Is My Sunshine will support at both).

The matinée show will open at 2pm, and to make things nice and fair for everyone, tickets will only be available on the door for this gig - first come first served.

What a lovely way to spend a sunday afternoon...

DP Demos

I just had the privilege of hearing the latest DP demos. My lord they're good. They won't be released for a while, though rest assured they'll only get bigger, better and, yep, phatter before they are.

In the meantime, for those in HK, catch their gig tomorrow night (sat 7th) at Backstage Live with the consistently ace Rockabilly kings El Destroyo and new kids on the block Poubelle International

And so it begins...

Welcome to The Peoples' Party! A Party of the People. For the People, by the... yep you get the idea.

A Party of any other sort would just be silly we think. So here we are: The Peoples' Party.

So what is The Peoples' Party?

Good question.

In essence it's simply a personal blog - and I like simple things. The focus will be on music - the music in, around and of Asia specifically.

There is some great music going on here and it's my intention to help expose it. Based in HK, there's also the opportunity to work together with friends and bring in quality acts to the region. So we'll do that when The People demand it.

There's no grand scheme or fiscal policy behind this. If we can help in some way to share the musical love, then that's quite enough for us.

Got any questions/comments? email: info@thepeoplesparty.tv
